Gwyneth and Chris Headed to Splitsville?

2008 could prove a bad year for transatlantic romance as Page Six reports that Gwyneth Paltrow skipped her husband's concert for the Victoria's Secret fashion show in Miami, adding fuel to the fire that the couple's marriage has been on the rocks for months.

Chris already announced another breakup. Will he double down? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Chris Martin Hints at Coldplay Breakup

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin told the Daily Express that his band is planning to break up at the end of 2009, the NME reports. He told the paper, "I'm 31 now and I don't think that bands should keep going past 33," he said. "So, we're trying to pack in as much as possible. Up until the end of next year, we'll just go for it in every sense."

Music critics around the globe breathed a collective sigh of relief at the news. Of course, plenty of bands make promises like this and never live up to them (I'm looking at you, R.E.M.), so we'll see if this isn't a ploy to squeeze every penny they can out of their fanbase (another album, another tour) before the music industry completely implodes.

Mourn the loss in the comments.

(Have you seen these photos of a nearly empty NIN concert in Ohio? Nobody's buying tickets, even at discount prices it seems.)

Jewel Practically Giving New Album Away

Do you remember when Jewel did that video, the half tongue-in-cheek, half-serious "Intuition?" It's equal parts social critique masquerading as marketing ploy appears to have become something of a business model for marketing the singer-songwriter, who first broke onto the national music scene with her folky hit, "Who Will Save Your Soul," back in 1996.

Since then she's undergone several transformations, from the pop-ready (if not friendly) strains of her 2003 album "0304" to her current country incarnation. Country Universe reports that she plans to release her country debut, "Perfectly Clear" on November 28th, for a minimum donation of $1. She's releasing the album via her website (www.jeweljk.com) and all proceeds to benefit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Now I know that releasing your album for next to nothing is in vogue these days, but does Jewel really think that country music fans will buy into this sort of naked careerism?

Actually, I preferred when Jewel was super famous and talking about poetry with Kurt Loder. Won't you remember the moment they shared together with me in the video below?

Prince Speaks Out on Gay Marriage

Idolator.com surfaced this gem of an interview with Prince about the recent election. In it, the mini-Minneapolis rocker spoke out on the question of gay marriage. His quote, in full:
“People with money—money like that—are not affected by the stock market, and they’re not freaking out over anything. They’re just watching. So here’s how it is: you’ve got the Republicans, and basically they want to live according to this.” He pointed to a Bible. “But there’s the problem of interpretation, and you’ve got some churches, some people, basically doing things and saying it comes from here, but it doesn’t. And then on the opposite end of the spectrum you’ve got blue, you’ve got the Democrats, and they’re, like, ‘You can do whatever you want.’ Gay marriage, whatever. But neither of them is right.”

When asked about his perspective on social issues—gay marriage, abortion—Prince tapped his Bible and said, “God came to earth and saw people sticking it wherever and doing it with whatever, and he just cleared it all out. He was, like, ‘Enough.’ ”

I may not agree with him, but it doesn't surprise me that a guitarist who plays so furiously would be an Old Testament kinda guy.

Prince's people claim that he was misquoted and that the interview was conducted without a tape recorder. I never thought I'd be linking to Perez Hilton, paragon of factual accuracy, in a blog post, but there's a first time for everything!

Bruce Gets the (E Street) Band Back Together Again

Raise your hand if you bought a copy of Bruce's last album, "Magic." I can't actually see you, but I'm guessing very few of you coughed up cash for it. Do you remember that song "Radio Nowhere?" The one that sounded like a Tommy Tutone cover?

Well, you can expect more of the same when Bruce and the E Street band team up with "Magic"-al producer Brendan O'Brien for a new batch of songs called "Working on a Dream" that will be out next January. Bruce adds,
"Towards the end of recording Magic, excited by the return to pop production sounds, I continued writing. When my friend producer Brendan O'Brien heard the new songs, he said, 'Let's keep going.' Over the course of the next year, that's just what we did, recording with the E Street Band during the breaks on last year's tour. I hope Working on a Dream has [captured] the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we've ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end."
I can't say that that sounds like the most promising album in the world, since it'll probably sound like a bunch of "Magic" outtakes, but I'm sure those tunes will be featured prominently in his Super Bowl halftime appearance, much to the chagrin of fans everywhere.

Prince Practicing What He Preaches

The next time you're confronted by Jehovah's Witnesses, one of them may be Prince! Page Six reports that the diminutive rocker has been going door-to-door in Los Angeles for his faith. He says "sometimes people act surprised, but mostly they're totally cool about it."

What would you do if Prince came knocking? I think I'd be compelled to let him in, give his spiel, and then talk to him about how awesome his Super Bowl halftime show was a couple years ago.
